The Starrett-Lehigh Building, located in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, is a significant landmark with a rich history. Originally built in 1931, this building served as a freight terminal with manufacturing and warehouse space above. Its design features continuous ribbon windows and brick spandrels, a striking departure from typical industrial buildings. The innovative design of this building features vast glass curtain walls and flat-slab reinforced concrete. It even allows railway freight cars to enter the building directly for unloading. This project involved replacing approximately 5,000 original steel-casement windows with energy-efficient aluminum-framed units, while maintaining the building’s iconic appearance.
